Relocation works better when lifestyle and property decisions are connected but not confused. Residence, income, healthcare, schooling, transport and a housing budget need to be tested before a purchase becomes the solution to every question.

Build the life plan first

List regular journeys, work requirements, healthcare, schools, travel frequency and the level of services you need. Island averages hide large local differences in climate, connectivity and housing supply.

Treat residence and ownership separately

Owning a property does not by itself establish a right of residence. EU registration, non-EU permissions and tax residence follow their own rules and should be checked against nationality and intended stay.

Test, rent or buy with evidence

A trial stay can reveal wind, noise, road access, parking, internet and seasonal patterns. If buying is the right next step, define the total budget and complete legal and technical checks before paying a deposit.

  • Use official residence guidance
  • Keep a post-move financial reserve
  • Compare micro-locations at normal times
  • Plan utilities, insurance and property care

Frequently asked questions

Does buying a home grant Spanish residence?

No. Property ownership and immigration or residence status are separate legal matters.

Should I rent before buying?

It can be a sensible way to test a location if you do not know its daily and seasonal conditions.

Can I organise the move remotely?

Many documents and viewings can be coordinated remotely, but local testing and independent checks remain important.
